The Advantages of Python
Posted 7 August, 2008 by Mike Pittaro in Python, SnapLogic
Tarus Balog of OpenNMS, on Python:
"Where Zenoss has a great advantage right now is the fact that they are
in Python. Python is kind of, the best of both worlds, you get a
lot of Java-esque kind of things but then you get the
usability of Perl." [1]
There’s a lot of commonality between network monitoring adapters and
application interfaces, which is why we implemented our SnapLogic components in
Python.
Although we weren’t aiming for the usability of Perl. You have to listen to the podcast to understand what he meant there.

I did take exception with the “usability of Perl” in the podcast, having tried to maintain Perl in some previous jobs. Tarus clarified a bit while I muted myself to go cough my lungs out (I had bronchitis). Python really does give Zenoss an advantage, we find a lot of sysadmins feel comfortable extending our system and integrating it with external interfaces, much like SnapLogic does.
