Happy Birthday CDs…
I read in the Merc today that CDs first went into mass production 25 years ago today, Aug. 17, 1982.
I remember that.
I recall that the first players were really expensive and most college students couldn’t afford one. I also remember when I finally did buy one. It was the Summer of 1985.
The reason I remember is that there was a new Dire Straits album (thats what we called them in those days), Brothers in Arms, that was recorded digitally and the only way to really experience it was with a CD.
The first time I heard it I knew it was time to get a CD player. I went out that day and bought a player and the CD.
I’ve still got it (the CD, not the player).
